Tell us how it all began
Describe how you two first met, was it love at first sight, when did you know each other was ‘the one’?
(Simon) We met on an online dating website. Lydia had only recently moved to the area so she was looking to meet new people to help her settle in. I initially joined the website to give moral support to a friend. I began to lose hope of meeting anybody normal until me and Lydia got talking. I decided to leave the website and we carried on talking offline. I took the plunge to go on a date where we met up for a drink, she was everything I was looking for and the rest was history. We quickly became closer and closer spending a lot of time together and I guess that was when we knew it was true love.
Tell us about the proposal
Who popped the question and how? What were the plans for the proposal, if any?
(Simon) I had in my mind that at some point in 2013 I was going to pop the question. I did the noble thing and asked Lydia’s dad for his permission for her hand in marriage. I saw an engagement ring in a bespoke jewellers and just knew I had to buy it. One evening in September a Disney advert came onto TV, Lydia said “I want to go to Disney again” in a sad voice as we had already visited Disney World, Florida, earlier that year. I thought right this is the moment. I walked into her dressing room where she was getting ready for bed and handed an envelope to her. I said to Lydia before you open the envelope I’ve got something to ask you, got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She started crying, to which I thought OMG what have I done. Luckily she did manage to say ‘YES’ and then opened the envelope. The envelope contained flights and accommodation to Paris and two tickets to see her favourite band in an intimate gig in Paris. I explained to her that we would also be going to Disney Land Paris whilst we were there. We had an amazing time.
Tell us about the wedding planning
How have you found planning the wedding so far?
(Lydia) We’ve really enjoyed the planning aspect, we think a year is the perfect amount of time to plan so it hasn’t become a long drawn out process and we’ve had to be quite decisive with the choices and decisions which has helped things move along well. We would agree living in Northampton and planning for a wedding that is taking place in Norfolk has encouraged us to be very organised with appointments, otherwise we would be constantly travelling backwards and forwards. My mum, Beryl, has been fantastic at taking on a role that can only be described as out PA/Wedding planner! She has spent many hours contacting people/companies to research our initial plans and ideas and we are truly thankful as we were rather overwhelmed in the beginning at how much there was to do! Simon likes to do the admin side of things and I have been very much hands on with the creative side! We have had to stop ourselves coming up with more and more creative touches as we were getting carried away!
The planning has taken up 12 months of our lives and we cannot wait for the day to arrive to share all our hard work with our special friends and family, however we are slightly scared we won’t know what to do with our spare time afterwards!
Lydia and Simon decided to have their engagement shoot at the family farm in Tuttington, Norfolk. We made the most of the surroundings and Lydia and Simon climbed up and down the hay bales like pros.Lydia and Simon will be getting married in a just over a months time at St Peters and St Pauls Church in Tuttington followed by their wedding reception at Drayton Old Lodge. I think it’s going to be a truly fantastic day!
